Recovery efforts continue after two presumed drownings on B.C. Interior lakes
Recovery efforts are underway following two separate presumed drowning incidents on Okanagan Lake and Mara Lake over the weekend.
On Okanagan Lake, West Kelowna RCMP responded to a boating incident at about 11:53 a.m. on July 11. Investigators say a 45-year-old man was being towed behind a boat on an inflatable tube when he was thrown into the water. The man, who was not wearing a personal flotation device, began struggling. The boat operator immediately entered the water to try to rescue him but was unable to reach him and also had to be rescued by a nearby boater.
West Kelowna RCMP, Kelowna Fire Rescue, Central Okanagan Search and Rescue, BC Emergency Health Services and the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team responded to the scene. Recovery efforts remain ongoing.
"This is a tragic reminder of how quickly recreational activities on the water can turn into an emergency," said Cpl. Devon Gerrits, Media Relations Officer for West Kelowna RCMP. "We extend our sincere condolences to the man's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We also want to remind everyone enjoying our lakes this summer to always wear a properly fitted personal flotation device. It is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent drowning."
Meanwhile, recovery efforts are also continuing on Mara Lake, where Sicamous RCMP received a report at approximately 8:13 p.m. on July 10 that a man had gone missing while boating with friends.
Police and Search and Rescue crews launched an extensive search of the lake and shoreline, while the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team, supported by the RCMP National Underwater Recovery Training Centre, developed a recovery plan. Sonar searches conducted Sunday did not locate the missing man due to the size of the search area. Crews are expected to resume operations Tuesday using alternative towed sonar technology.
"We would like to thank Search and Rescue volunteers and all partner agencies involved for their continued dedication and support throughout this operation. Our thoughts are with the missing man's family and friends during this difficult time," said Sgt. Murrey McNeil, commander of the Sicamous RCMP detachment.
Both investigations remain ongoing.
