Ottawa commits up to $145M for World Cup security

The federal government is setting aside up to $145 million to support security measures for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Canada is co-hosting the tournament with the United States and Mexico, with 13 matches scheduled in Toronto and Vancouver this June and July.

According to a government release, the funding addresses “specific operational needs” identified by host provinces and cities. Gary Anandasangaree said organizing an event of this scale requires a large, coordinated security effort, assuring fans attending matches and fan festivals that safety measures will be in place.

Ottawa had previously committed up to $320 million toward hosting the tournament.
