New Westminster traffic stop leads to impaired driving allegations and drug trafficking investigation
An early morning traffic stop in New Westminster has resulted in impaired driving allegations and a drug trafficking investigation after police found suspected drugs and more than $1,800 in cash inside a vehicle.
On October 24, 2026, at approximately 5 a.m., New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) officers spotted a vehicle travelling northbound over the Stalewasem Bridge. The vehicle was swerving repeatedly and nearly struck a concrete median.
Officers pulled the vehicle over and identified the driver, who was found to be under a driving prohibition. The driver also failed a roadside alcohol screening test.
A search of the vehicle uncovered a quantity of suspected drugs consistent with drug trafficking, along with more than $1,800 in Canadian currency.
Samples of the suspected drugs have been sent to Health Canada for analysis and identification.
The driver was served with the driving prohibition, issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition and released with conditions while the drug trafficking investigation continues.
“Our officers’ proactive work is what led to this arrest,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver, Media Relations Officer.
“By paying close attention to dangerous driving behaviour and conducting a thorough investigation, they were able to remove a prohibited and impaired driver from the road while also uncovering suspected drugs and proceeds of crime. This is exactly the type of investigative work that helps keep our community safe.”
NWPD said officers will continue proactive enforcement efforts to remove impaired drivers from the roads and address criminal activity to improve public safety and prevent harm in the community.
