MLA calls for review after six people killed or seriously injured in Surrey police collisions

Six people have died or suffered serious injuries in collisions involving the Surrey Police Service over the past 12 months, prompting a local MLA to call for a provincial review.

The latest incident occurred at about 3 a.m. on September 7.

According to a Surrey Police Service news release, officers were attempting to stop the driver of a black Chevrolet Avalanche near King George Boulevard and 96 Avenue when the vehicles collided.

Police say the truck driver failed to stop and later crashed into a concrete SkyTrain barrier. A pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries in the incident.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C., the province’s police watchdog, is investigating the collision.

However, Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Elenore Sturko is calling for an additional review by the provincial government to determine whether further measures could prevent similar incidents.

Sturko wrote on X: “6 people have died or were seriously injured in collisions involving SPS in the past 12 months. In addition to the ongoing IIO investigations, I am calling on @NinaKriegerBC to request a review to determine if there is more that can be done to prevent further incidents.”
