Missing count rises sharply after deadly Nepal floods

The number of people reported missing in Nepal has climbed sharply following last week’s devastating floods, with more than 4,200 people now unaccounted for, compared with roughly 2,500 reported a day earlier. Including casualties in China, the death toll has reached 919, while 4,793 people remain missing on both sides of the border.Of those reported missing, 3,655 are Nepali citizens and 592 are foreign nationals.

In Rasuwa, Nepal, emergency crews searching tunnels at the Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project found no signs of human presence. A Nepali Army-led team inspected the underground network near the Bhote Koshi River after the tunnels were submerged by floodwaters, mud and sediment.

Engineers reached the innermost section of the tunnel and used a drone to inspect areas that could not be safely accessed. However, no people were found.

Authorities are searching for 933 hydropower workers believed to be among those still missing from sites across northern Nepal, where several projects were hit by the devastating floods.
