Conservatives Demand Immigration Overhaul Following Security Screening Gaps
Conservative Shadow Minister for Immigration Michelle Rempel Garner has issued a detailed statement sharply criticizing the federal Liberal government’s newly released National Security Strategy, arguing that it completely overlooks serious, proven security screening vulnerabilities for non citizens entering the country.
Pointing to growing immigration intake, Garner emphasized that official data demonstrates the federal government’s background check infrastructure is severely overwhelmed, highlighting that CSIS background check referrals soared to a record 538,000 in 2024 while the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) accumulated an unprocessed inventory of roughly 195,000 cases.
To illustrate these systemic failures, she cited the high profile case of Ahmed Eldidi, who successfully passed multiple security background checks and acquired Canadian citizenship in May 2024 before being arrested just two months later on ISIS related terrorism charges connected to a 2015 video that had been publicly available online for years. Furthermore, Garner drew attention to widespread document fraud within international student visa applications a concern recently backed by Auditor General findings as well as border officers' concerns over expedited asylum processing protocols that limit early risk detection.
The statement also raised alarms over tracking mechanisms, noting that out of 39,500 international students required to leave Canada in 2024, the CBSA could only verify that approximately 16,000 had actually departed, leaving roughly 33,000 individuals on active wanted lists after failing to report for removal.
Calling for immediate legislative and operational overhauls, the Official Opposition is demanding strict pre-arrival vetting, automated departure tracking for visa overstays, clear criteria to protect innocent applicants such as forced conscripts, and an immediate reduction in overall immigration levels until robust national security safeguards are permanently restored.
