Canada’s population sees slight decline in first quarter of 2026
Canada’s population experienced a marginal decrease during the first quarter of this year, according to recent estimates released by Statistics Canada. The data indicates a 0.1 per cent drop in the country’s total population, marking a departure from the rapid growth trends observed in recent years.
The decline is primarily attributed to a reduction in the number of non-permanent residents across the country. As of April 1, Canada’s total population is estimated at 41,417,056. This represents a decrease of 55,025 people compared to the population count on January 1.
This quarterly dip stands in contrast to Canada's recent demographic trajectory, where high levels of migration—particularly among non-permanent residents—had been the primary engine driving significant population growth.
