B.C. Conservatives pledge anti-extortion plan and tougher measures for repeat offenders

Conservative Party of BC Leader Lorne Doerkson has unveiled an Anti-Extortion Action Plan aimed at tackling gang-related threats against businesses and families, while pledging tougher measures for repeat and violent offenders.

The party says extortion has become a growing concern across British Columbia, with business owners and families facing threats, intimidation and violence. Doerkson also criticized the current bail system, arguing that repeat and violent offenders are returning to the streets shortly after being arrested.

Under the proposed plan, a Conservative government would assign specialized investigators to extortion cases and establish clear reporting and protection procedures for threatened businesses and families.

The party also plans to address gang recruitment among young people and provide pathways to help them avoid involvement in organized crime.

Jessy Sahota, the party’s candidate for Surrey-Serpentine, said businesses and families should not have to choose between paying criminals and protecting their loved ones. She said the plan would target those responsible for threats and provide protection for victims who come forward.

To address repeat and violent crime, Doerkson has also pledged to establish a dedicated court stream for repeat offenders, strengthen bail and warrant enforcement, and expand electronic monitoring for individuals released into the community.

The proposals build on the party’s broader public safety plan, which includes hiring 1,000 additional police officers, prosecutors and support staff.

Doerkson said the party aims to increase police presence, strengthen prosecution and introduce stronger consequences for those who threaten businesses and families.
