Quebec doctor Sanjeev Sirpal found guilty of assault, counselling fabrication of false evidence

A doctor in Quebec has been found guilty of two counts of assault and one count of counselling a person to commit an offence that was not committed.

Quebec Court Judge Frédéric Bénard found that Sanjeev Sirpal asked his then-girlfriend to create a false diary entry claiming she had witnessed one of his patients wearing a Nazi symbol and making a racist remark in a Montreal-area waiting room.

Bénard told a courtroom in Laval, Que., that Sirpal had urged the woman to fabricate the story to discredit the patient, who had complained about him to the province’s doctors’ college.

The patient ultimately decided not to proceed with the complaint. As a result, the diary was never used in Sirpal’s defence or seen by anyone other than the accused, the judge said.

The judge also concluded that Sirpal assaulted his former girlfriend in August and December 2020.

Sirpal has also worked as a doctor in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

He was removed from the interprovincial Atlantic Registry on March 20, 2025. According to CBC news, a few months later, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick suspended his licence.

Nova Scotia RCMP charged Sirpal with sexual assault in August 2025 after receiving a complaint about an alleged assault during an assessment in an emergency room at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre near Amherst in northern Nova Scotia.

Sirpal was released on conditions following his arrest, Nova Scotia RCMP said. The case returned to court last Tuesday for a decision on pretrial applications.

While practising in northwestern New Brunswick, Sirpal worked at Edmundston Regional Hospital, according to the province’s physician registry.

A sexual assault charge against him in northwestern New Brunswick was withdrawn this month, according to Radio-Canada.

Sirpal was accused of sexually assaulting a patient at Edmundston Regional Hospital in August 2025. The 39-year-old was scheduled to stand trial in February next year.

However, the charge was withdrawn by a Crown prosecutor during an appearance in Edmundston provincial court. The reason for the withdrawal is not known.

Sirpal still faces charges elsewhere in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. He is accused of sexually assaulting a patient at Sackville Memorial Hospital in southeastern New Brunswick on Feb. 22, 2025. A trial in Moncton provincial court is scheduled for April 13-14 next year.
