Two Toronto residents charged after alleged jewelry distraction thefts in Etobicoke

Toronto Police have arrested and charged a man and a woman in connection with two distraction theft incidents in Etobicoke. Police allege the pair targeted the same Etobicoke woman on two separate occasions.

The first incident occurred on June 14 near Bloor Street West and Islington Avenue. According to investigators, the suspects approached the woman and insisted on giving her jewelry as a gift. Although she refused, they allegedly placed the jewelry on her and, during the interaction, removed her genuine jewelry and replaced it with inexpensive imitation pieces.

Police say the suspects returned to the same victim on Wednesday afternoon this week and attempted to steal more of her jewelry. This time, the woman recognized the pair and immediately contacted police. Officers responded and arrested both suspects nearby.

Elena Alexandru, 30, has been charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, and failing to comply with an undertaking.

Ilie Calin, 26, has been charged with robbery and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. Both have appeared in court. The allegations have not been proven in court.
