Suspect charged with arson at Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s Toronto home

Toronto police have arrested one person and are searching for a second suspect in connection with an arson investigation in the Bellamy Road North and Lawrence Avenue East area.

Police responded to a fire call at about 1:21 a.m. on August 27, 2026. Investigators allege that a suspect approached several vehicles parked in the driveway of a residence, poured an accelerant over them and set two vehicles on fire. A third vehicle was also damaged by the blaze before the suspect fled in a vehicle.

On August 30, police arrested 24-year-old Roshvin Crofton, who faces charges including arson causing damage to property, mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, possession of incendiary material and failure to comply with a probation order.

Crofton is scheduled to appear in court on September 8 at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre.

Police have released images of the accused and the vehicle seized during the investigation. Investigators are also trying to identify a second suspect believed to have been involved.

Police are asking for information about a black 2025 Hyundai Sonata and anyone who may have seen the vehicle between August 23 and the August 27 arson. The initial press release issued by the Toronto Police Service today did not identify the location as the home of Liberal MP Salma Zahid or state that the arrest was connected to an arson incident at her residence. However, the address provided in the police release, along with a report by The Canadian Press, confirms that the arrest was made for the incident occurred at the MP’s home.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Toronto police at 416-808-4300, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or 222tips.com.
