Oshawa man charged in alleged $400,000 fraud targeting elderly Ajax woman

Durham Regional Police have charged an Oshawa man in an alleged fraud case involving an elderly Ajax woman who reportedly lost more than $400,000.

According to police, the case came to light in October 2023, when officers conducted a wellness check at a residence near Windsor Avenue and Elm Street in Ajax following concerns about the elderly woman’s safety and possible abuse.

Based on information provided by the woman, the police unit responsible for investigating crimes involving seniors launched an investigation into allegations of fraud and theft.

Following a lengthy investigation, police say the woman suffered financial losses exceeding $400,000.

On September 29, 2026, police arrested Christos Charalambous of Oshawa.

He has been charged with theft over $5,000, fraud over $5,000, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Police are concerned there may be additional victims and have released the accused’s photograph.
