Nepal flash flood kills 160, hundreds still missing

At least 160 people have been killed and hundreds remain missing after a devastating flash flood swept through villages in Nepal, destroying homes and damaging roads, bridges and power projects in areas near the border with Tibet.

Nepali police said late Wednesday that 157 bodies had been recovered, while rescue teams continued efforts to evacuate people from areas at risk.

Officials said at least 384 tourists were reported missing, including 291 foreign visitors from countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, India and Malaysia. Police spokesman Abi Narayan Kafle said that 28 police personnel were also among those missing.

Across the border in Tibet, Chinese authorities reported at least three deaths, while 265 people remained missing in Gyirong County. State broadcaster CCTV said the exact number of casualties was still being verified.

The disaster has caused widespread destruction in the Himalayan region, damaging critical infrastructure and complicating rescue operations.

Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah urged the country to stand united as authorities continue search and rescue efforts and assess the full scale of the disaster.
