Hamilton Police Shut Down Two Illegal Cannabis Dispensaries, Two Men Charged
Hamilton Police have shut down two illegal cannabis dispensaries and charged two men following enforcement operations at separate locations in the city.
Police say one dispensary, located at 45 Wellington Street North, reopened just one day after officers executed a search warrant there two weeks ago.
Officers returned to the location yesterday with another search warrant, shut down the operation and barred access to the premises, including the building owner. A 27-year-old Hamilton man faces five charges, including selling cannabis without authorization, possession of illicit cannabis for the purpose of selling, and proceeds of crime.
Police also executed a search warrant at a second illegal dispensary at 1142 Barton Street East, with assistance from provincial and municipal enforcement agencies. A 24-year-old man was charged with five offences, including trafficking in controlled tobacco and selling cannabis without authorization.
Hamilton Police Chief Frank Bergen warned illegal operators that reopening after police enforcement would result in further action. He also cautioned property owners who knowingly allow illegal businesses to operate that they could face enforcement.
Police estimate approximately 30 illegal cannabis dispensaries are operating in Hamilton. They say enforcement efforts are continuing as part of a broader strategy to address illegal drug activity and organized crime in the community.
