Trump contacted Apple over renaming Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’: U.S. official

U.S. President Donald Trump contacted Apple about changing the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” according to a U.S. official.

The development comes after the “Lake America” label appeared on several Ontario provincial government agency websites over the weekend following an update to Google Maps that changed how the lake’s name was displayed in the United States and internationally.

By Monday morning, the name had been restored to Lake Ontario after agencies including Metrolinx, Hydro One and the LCBO moved to reverse the change on their online maps.

The controversy follows an executive order signed by Trump on Thursday seeking to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” The move comes amid continuing trade tensions between Canada and the United States.

Lake Ontario has been known by its current name for more than 400 years. The attempted name change has drawn strong criticism from Canadians as well as some of Trump’s political opponents in the United States.

The latest development has added another point of friction to already strained Canada-U.S. relations.
