Trump casts doubt on renewing North American trade pact ahead of key review
U.S. President Donald Trump has raised uncertainty about the future of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), saying he is not interested in renewing the continental free trade deal when it comes up for review later this year.
Asked Wednesday about the upcoming review of the agreement, known in the United States as USMCA, Trump told reporters, āIām not looking to renew it,ā adding that the United States does not need anything that Canada or Mexico has.
The comments come ahead of a critical July 1 deadline, when all three member countries must indicate whether they support extending the agreement for another 16 years or prefer to move to annual reviews, as outlined in the treaty.
Despite Trump's remarks, discussions over the future of the trade pact have continued. Canada has already signalled its interest in renewing the agreement, while the United States and Mexico have reported progress in their formal bilateral negotiations.
Informal talks between Canadian and American officials have also been taking place for several months as both sides seek to address trade concerns and maintain economic stability across North America.
