Special mail-in ballots for Alberta’s 10-question referendum set to be distributed

Special mail-in ballots for Alberta’s upcoming 10-question referendum are expected to begin reaching voters starting today.

According to Elections Alberta, voters who have already registered for a special ballot will soon receive their voting packages through the mail. Eligible voters can also choose to pick up their special ballot packages in person.

Special ballots are intended for Albertans who may be unable to cast their votes in person when polls open on October 19.

The referendum will ask voters to weigh in on 10 questions put forward by Premier Danielle Smith’s government.

Among the most closely watched questions is one dealing with Alberta’s future within Canada. Voters will be asked whether they want the province to remain part of Canada or proceed to a second, binding vote on separation from Canada.

The referendum is expected to generate significant political debate across the province as Albertans prepare to vote on a range of issues next month.
