Sinkhole disrupts businesses and traffic in Calgary’s Bowness

A large sinkhole on Bowness Road is disrupting traffic, parking and local businesses after two water-main breaks in Calgary’s northwest Bowness community.

Residents say infrastructure problems have become increasingly common, with three similar incidents reported in the area over roughly the past month. Water wagons have returned as crews work on repairs, adding to access and parking challenges along the busy road.

Local business Brewsmith has been particularly affected. Without running water, the business cannot operate normally during the busy summer patio season. It remains partially open, offering canned products at a 10 per cent “sinkhole sale” discount.

Other nearby businesses are also dealing with limited access to washrooms and drinking water.

Safety concerns have also grown following a recent incident in which a cyclist reportedly fell into a sinkhole and was taken to hospital with an apparent leg injury.

Despite the repeated infrastructure disruptions, local businesses say they remain committed to Bowness and are determined to continue serving the community.
