Saskatchewan conservative MP Cathay Wagantall resigns from house of commons

Saskatchewan Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall officially resigned from the House of Commons on Monday, becoming the 10th member of Parliament to step down this year.

Wagantall announced in June that she planned to leave her position at the end of August. She had initially intended to complete her term but did not provide a specific reason for her decision to resign.

Wagantall had represented the Saskatchewan riding of Yorkton—Melville since 2015.

Her departure comes as another Conservative MP prepares to leave federal politics. Ontario MP Larry Brock, who has represented Brantford—Brant South—Six Nations since 2021, is expected to resign later this month. Brock plans to return to his previous career as a Crown prosecutor.

The House of Commons is scheduled to resume sitting on September 21, with three newly elected Liberal MPs joining the government benches following Monday’s federal byelections. All three byelections were triggered by previous resignations.

In Monday’s voting, the Liberals successfully retained two seats previously represented by former cabinet ministers Jonathan Wilkinson and Nate Erskine-Smith.
