Rempel Garner warns Calgary could face up to $466M in tariff costs

Calgary Nose Hill MP Michelle Rempel Garner is raising concerns about the potential financial impact of tariffs on the City of Calgary, after city officials released projections showing hundreds of millions of dollars in possible exposure.

According to Rempel Garner, city officials estimate the tariff-related risk on existing contracts could range between $315 million and $466 million, while she says there are currently no contingency plans in place to deal with those additional costs.

Her comments come as Prime Minister Mark Carney warned Canadians of “tough times” ahead amid ongoing trade tensions. Rempel Garner criticized the federal government, saying trade talks have not resumed, Parliament remains in recess and Canadians have not been given full details about the recently collapsed negotiations.

The Calgary MP said many residents were already struggling with affordability pressures before the tariffs took effect, pointing to increased reliance on food banks, housing challenges and difficulties facing small businesses.

Rempel Garner is calling on Carney to recall Parliament, release details of the rejected trade deal and provide a full assessment of what the tariffs could cost Canadian households, businesses and municipalities.

She said the federal government must act immediately, arguing that too much is at stake for Canadians and municipalities to wait for answers.
