PM Carney calls Canadian unity key as leaders discuss response to U.S. tariff threats

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada’s unity is its greatest strength as he met with provincial and territorial leaders in Charlottetown, P.E.I., to prepare a response to new tariff threats from the United States.

Speaking before a meeting with all 13 premiers and territorial leaders, Carney said Canada is in a stronger position than when the trade dispute began, crediting the cooperation of leaders across the country.

Standing in the historic location where the Fathers of Confederation helped create Canada, Carney said the country can overcome challenges when it works together.

He said Canada today is more diverse, prosperous and prepared, adding that a united “Team Canada” can handle any challenge.

The closed-door roundtable focused on strengthening Canada’s approach to trade and protecting the economy amid renewed concerns over possible U.S. tariffs.
