Experts warn separation debate could hurt Alberta economy

Economists and business leaders warn Alberta’s separation debate could create economic uncertainty, reduce investment and cost jobs even without a break from Canada.

Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas says the prospect could weaken investor confidence and trigger capital flight, while an Alberta Chambers of Commerce survey finds more than half already see negative economic impacts.

Supporters argue independence could boost revenues and resource development, but critics say costs like defence, currency and diplomacy are being underestimated.

Economists including Dr. Trevor Tombe warn uncertainty alone could cost up to 50,000 jobs, with experts pointing to Brexit and Quebec referendums as cautionary examples.

An Ipsos poll shows 72 per cent of Albertans oppose separation, 18 per cent support it, and the rest are undecided.
