Disability benefit payment errors affect thousands of Albertans

Thousands of Albertans receiving disability benefits have reported incorrect, reduced or missing payments following a technical system error that affected August benefit deposits.

The Alberta government says about two per cent of recipients, or 1,605 people, were impacted by the error. The province has apologized and says all affected recipients will receive their full payments by July 31.

Some recipients received hundreds of dollars less than expected, while others received too much or no payment at all. The errors have caused financial stress for people who rely on the benefits to cover rent, groceries and other essential expenses.

Disability advocate Don Slater said his payment was $270 short after the government used outdated income information from his 2025 tax return. ADAP recipient Sam Myers said she received $500 less than expected and did not receive the promised $200 monthly transition benefit, leaving her concerned about paying rent and other basic expenses.

The Alberta NDP and disability advocates have criticized the rollout of the Alberta Disability Assistance Program, or ADAP, and are calling for improvements to disability support programs and better communication with recipients.

The province says it is working to resolve the payment issues and ensure affected Albertans receive the money they are owed.
