Danielle Smith urges united front as U.S. tariffs take effect
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she has been in contact with Ontario Premier Doug Ford to discuss how Canada can best weather the growing trade storm as new U.S. tariffs on selected Canadian goods take effect.
Smith says the two premiers have been discussing ways to protect their provinces and the broader Canadian economy from the impact of the escalating trade dispute with the United States.
The Alberta premier also stressed that Canada's energy exports must not become part of a larger trade war between the two countries, warning that such a move could have serious consequences for both Canada and the United States.
A new wave of American tariffs is coming into effect after trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington broke down on Friday.
Prime Minister Mark Carney says U.S. negotiators introduced new conditions at the last minute that Canada could not accept. Carney says the proposed terms would have undermined Canada's sovereignty and limited its ability to negotiate trade agreements with other countries.
