Carney says Canada ready to support reopening of Strait of Hormuz after U.S.-Iran deal announcement

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada is prepared to help support efforts to restore maritime shipping in the Strait of Hormuz if a reported breakthrough in talks between the United States and Iran is successfully implemented.

Carney made the remarks on Monday after arriving in France for the G7 summit, following an announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump that an agreement had been reached to end the conflict in Iran.

Trump said the deal was reached on Sunday and confirmed he had authorized an end to the U.S. blockade in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. However, he later stated that the waterway would not reopen until Friday, when the agreement is expected to be formally signed.

Speaking to reporters on the tarmac in Ireland before departing for Geneva, Carney said Canada would use the G7 summit as an opportunity to assess how allied nations can support and reinforce the reported agreement.

“Canada very much welcomes this progress,” Carney said, adding that discussions among G7 partners could help determine practical steps toward stabilizing global shipping routes.
