Canada sends ‘Open for Business’ message at Calgary Energy Show

Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson told international delegates at the Global Energy Show in Calgary that Canada is “open for business” and positioned as a reliable energy supplier in a volatile global market.

Hodgson said Canada’s energy policy is now closely linked to economic, trade, security, and investment priorities, adding that the country’s stability and democratic institutions make it an attractive destination for global energy investment.

The event comes amid ongoing discussions about a potential new West Coast oilsands pipeline tied to an energy agreement between Alberta and Ottawa. However, the project remains uncertain and depends on the proposed “Pathways” carbon capture and storage initiative and related emissions targets.

Industry leaders, including Jon McKenzie, warned that carbon pricing and emissions rules could weaken investment in the oilsands. He said the proposed Pathways project, estimated at $20–30 billion, faces major financing challenges under current conditions.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said progress on the pipeline and related projects depends on meeting emissions targets and ensuring regulatory certainty, adding that clearer policy conditions are needed to move timelines forward and attract investment.
