Calgary warns against illegal fireworks ahead of Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas

The City of Calgary is reminding residents that personal fireworks are prohibited within the city as families prepare to celebrate Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas.

The Calgary Fire Department, Emergency Management and Community Safety, and Calgary Police Service are urging residents to celebrate safely and follow city bylaws.

The warning follows Diwali 2025, when police received 167 fireworks-related calls and the City received 44 reports through 311. Fire crews also responded to several fireworks-related incidents, including grass, vehicle and structure fires.

Updated penalties came into effect on September 22, 2026. Selling fireworks without authorization can result in a $3,000 fine, while possessing fireworks in a public place or discharging them without a permit can each lead to a $1,000 fine.

The updated bylaw also allows enforcement against people carrying or setting up fireworks in public places before they are discharged.

City officials are encouraging residents to use alternatives such as traditional diyas, LED candles and festive lights, or attend community celebrations. Small birthday cake sparklers are exempt from the bylaw but must be used safely.
