Calgary Transit recommends ending downtown free fare zone

Calgary Transit is recommending the end of Calgary’s downtown free fare zone starting Aug. 1 after 45 years in operation.

City officials say eliminating the zone could generate up to $5 million annually in additional transit revenue, money that could be used to improve CTrain safety and security measures.

The free fare zone currently allows riders to travel at no cost along 7th Avenue between City Hall/Bow Valley College and Downtown West/Kerby stations.

Supporters say removing the zone would improve safety and fare fairness, while critics and many residents argue the free fare zone should be kept or expanded.

Officials also considered introducing a separate $2 downtown fare but rejected the idea over concerns it would create a confusing fare structure.

Calgary city council’s infrastructure and planning committee is set to review the recommendation today.
