Calgary Transit driver returns to work after 2025 bus attack

A Calgary Transit driver has returned to work more than a year after being brutally attacked on his bus, as one of his attackers was sentenced Friday.

Amarjit Grewal, 67, was attacked by brothers Darryl Flett and Curtis Baker Spence on May 14, 2025, while his bus was stopped in northwest Calgary.

Flett pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and breaching a release condition. He was sentenced Friday to three years in prison followed by 18 months of probation.

Justice Frederick Fisher said it was an aggravating factor that Grewal was attacked while performing his duties as a transit operator.

Court heard Baker Spence struck Grewal with a baton while Flett used a sharp-edged weapon. A passenger attempted to protect the driver with a cushion as the assault continued.

Baker Spence pleaded guilty to robbery and breaching a release condition and was sentenced to four years in prison in June. Both brothers had been under court-ordered conditions prohibiting them from possessing weapons at the time of the attack.

Grewal suffered an ongoing hand injury and called 911 after the brothers fled. Police arrested them about seven hours later at a northeast Calgary McDonald’s.

Calgary Transit employees attended Friday’s hearing in support of Grewal.

Before sentencing, Flett apologized directly to Grewal, saying he was sorry for putting him in danger and wished he could go back in time.
