Calgary Stampede kicks off today with new attractions and festivities

The 2026 Calgary Stampede officially begins today, marking the start of the city's 10-day celebration of western heritage, entertainment, and community.

Festivities kicked off Thursday with the First Flip pancake breakfast on Stephen Avenue and an evening sneak peek at Stampede Park. Politicians from all levels of government joined Calgarians at the breakfast, highlighting the event as a symbol of community and unity.

This year's Stampede features returning favourites such as the Showband, agriculture exhibits, and mini donuts, along with two new midway rides, 60 new food items, and the debut of the Flying Fools high-diving show, where divers leap from a 25-metre platform into a three-metre-deep pool.

Calgary Stampede CEO Joel Cowley says a recent economic impact study found the event generated $389 million for Alberta, with 90 per cent of the benefits remaining in Calgary. Last year's Stampede attracted more than 1.47 million visitors, while local business activity increased by 18 per cent during the festival.

Nearly 150 free pancake breakfasts will take place throughout the Stampede, and $50 Superpasses offering unlimited admission for all 10 days are available until midnight Thursday.
