Calgary identifies 50 high-risk pedestrian intersections using AI
Calgary has identified its 50 highest-risk pedestrian intersections using artificial intelligence, with city administration proposing $6 million in safety upgrades to improve many of the locations.
A report going before the Community Development Committee on Tuesday recommends improvements at 26 intersections, including curb extensions, roundabouts, raised crosswalks and traffic signals. The AI analyzed more than 17,000 unsignalized intersections across the city, assigning each a risk score out of 100.
The highest-risk intersection is Martindale Boulevard and Martindale Gate N.E., followed by Falshire Drive and Falton Drive N.E. Eight of the top 50 locations are in Ward 5.
While city staff say the proposed upgrades would allow Calgary to address safety concerns before collisions occur, transportation advocates argue reducing vehicle speeds should remain the city's top priority.
Council must approve funding before any of the proposed projects move ahead.
