Calgary heat and wildfire smoke raise health concerns
Calgary is facing a combination of hot weather and wildfire smoke, with Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasting a high of 28 C today. Widespread smoke is expected to continue, with temperatures remaining in the mid-to-high 20s through the coming days.
Wildfire smoke from areas of Western Canada and the United States is contributing to poor air quality across parts of the Prairies. The hot and dry conditions are also raising concerns about increased wildfire risks.
Health officials warn that the combination of heat and smoke can increase the risk of heart, lung, kidney and heat-related illnesses, particularly for children, seniors and people with existing health conditions.
Calgarians are encouraged to monitor air quality, limit strenuous outdoor activities and spend less time outside when smoke levels are high. People with respiratory or other health concerns should take extra precautions.
The Calgary Folk Festival is monitoring weather and air quality, with water stations, misting areas and air-quality monitors in place. Organizers say the event could be suspended if conditions become unsafe.
