ASIRT investigates fatal officer-involved shooting in southeast Calgary
Alberta's police watchdog is investigating after a woman was shot and killed by a Calgary police officer during a welfare check in the city's southeast early morning.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken over the investigation following the officer-involved shooting in the 200 block of Legacy Circle S.E.
According to the Calgary Police Service, officers were called to a home at about 1:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26, for a welfare check involving a woman inside the residence.
Police say that at approximately 2:30 a.m., the woman exited the home with a weapon. The situation escalated, and one officer fired their service weapon, striking the woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the incident, a gas meter was ruptured, causing a gas leak in the neighbourhood. Officers evacuated nearby homes and escorted residents to safety until the Calgary Fire Department secured the area. Police said the cause of the gas leak has not been determined, and residents were allowed to return to their homes a short time later.
One officer was taken to hospital as a precaution, while another was assessed by paramedics at the scene. Police say both officers are recovering.
