Alberta Health inspectors' Union Warns Restructuring could jeopardize public safety

The union representing Alberta’s public health inspectors is raising concerns about a provincial plan that would shift inspectors from Alberta Health Services (AHS) to direct government employment, warning the move could put public health and safety at risk.

The Alberta Union of Public Employees (AUPE) says public health inspectors play a critical frontline role in protecting residents by enforcing Alberta’s Public Health Act. Their responsibilities include inspecting restaurants, food-service businesses, personal care facilities, child-care centres, and continuing care homes to ensure health and safety standards are being met.

According to the union, the provincial government intends to make inspectors direct employees of the government rather than keeping them under the oversight of AHS. AUPE argues that the proposed change could compromise the independence and professional oversight inspectors need to effectively carry out their duties.

The union says public health inspectors are essential in preventing health hazards, investigating complaints, and ensuring businesses and care facilities comply with regulations designed to protect the public.
