Alberta eases liquor service rules for major events

Licensed businesses across Alberta can now begin serving alcohol as early as 6 a.m. without needing special approval during major sporting events, cultural celebrations and other significant occasions.

The change applies to establishments holding Class A, B, C and F licences through Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), including restaurants, bars and private clubs. While businesses can start serving alcohol earlier, existing closing-time regulations remain in place, requiring establishments to close by 3 a.m. with last call at 2 a.m.

Previously, businesses were required to submit separate applications for special permission to serve alcohol before 9 a.m. during major events. For example, during the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Games, licensees had to seek approval from the AGLC and notify the agency of any changes to their operating hours.

The Alberta government says the new policy is designed to reduce administrative burdens and provide greater flexibility for business owners, particularly during international sporting events that may take place in different time zones.

Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally said the change will help businesses better serve customers gathering for major sporting competitions, special celebrations and other events that attract early-morning crowds.
