Alberta announces record $10.8B education funding for new school year

Alberta is investing a record $10.8 billion in education this school year, increasing funding by more than seven per cent to support growing enrolment and improve classroom learning.

The province says the funding will add more teachers, educational assistants and classroom supports after nearly 90,000 new students enrolled in Alberta schools over the past four years.

The government says 2,127 new teachers and 1,044 educational assistants have been hired, while 699 classroom complexity teams are being funded to help support students with diverse learning needs.

Alberta is also investing in new school infrastructure, with 156 school projects underway and 194 new modular classrooms expected to create about 5,900 additional student spaces.

Premier Danielle Smith said the investments respond to calls from parents and teachers for more classroom support, while Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said the funding will help ensure students have the resources they need to succeed.
