Xylitol, a common low-calorie sweetener, is used in many household products such as mouthwashes, lozenges, candies, toothpaste, peanut butter, and baked goods. However, researchers are raising concerns about its safety. A study conducted by the Center for Cardiovascular Diagnostics and Prevention at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute has linked xylitol to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Dr. Stanley Hazen, the institute’s director, emphasized the urgent need for further investigation into sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners, especially since they are often recommended for managing conditions like obesity and diabetes.
